Who was the “man” with whom Jacob wrestled?
In Genesis 32:24, it states that Jacob wrestled with a man all night. There is some speculation as to who this man was:
1. Song of man-Jesus
2. Some say it was God
3. Others say it was the future that he was wrestling with
Kurmmacher in his book Jacob wrestling with the angel, he states it was the son of man (Jesus).. The man assumed a human body so he could wrestle with Jacob. It was an extraordinary occurrence to say the least! Jacob did not know who this was at first, but it apparently became apparent to him who this man really was because Jacob even called the Place Peniel; (which means The Face of God), for he said I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
Nissim Gal, an Assistant professor of modern & Contemporary Art, states that it could be the future that Jacob was wrestling with, though the entity never states who he is, Jacob decides to name the place “Peniel-meaning face of God, as if he was struggling with a man that had the face of God. The entity touches his hip and so to speak pulls it out of the joint; Israel to this day does not eat the sinew of the thigh, which is by the hip-socket. Therefore, Gal suggests that Jacob has been wrestling with the future. Gal also states, “if we look at this struggle as the future, it enables us to indentify the situation as an encounter with exteriority, or as an expression of the infinity of time. “
Ester Hamori in her journal, Echoes of Gilgamesh in the Jacob Story that agent is divine and the “man” shows himself to be God. He renames Jacob, explaining that Jacob has striven with God. He blesses him, and this is when Jacob realizes that he had an encounter with God, so he responds by naming the place Peniel. The divine opponent of Jacob makes a declaration that the identity and legacy of Jacob in relation to God, affirms that Jacob prevailed over all others.
I agree with Kurmmacher, that it was the Son of Man because the Bible never states that he wrestled with an angel but with a man. Since Jacob understood that he was wrestling with God and saw him face to face, then people assume that it was God the son, Jesus. Isaac & Abraham stories also state that they saw God in the form of a man. I believe the Bible clearly states that this was indeed the Son of Man, whom is called Jesus.
