A scenario
When Tom and Jane came to me with their problem, I was happy that they chose to come to me for help before they did something that they might regret. I advised them about the Biblical teachings of marriage. The original design of marriage was creating Adam from the dust of the earth, and creating Eve from Adam’s rib. God created man and woman so we could be together and it shows also the love Christ has for us. As Genesis 2:18 states; it is not good for man to be alone, I will make him a help meet for him. Genesis 2:23 states; this is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman for she was taken out of man.
As a Christian couple in Christ, you are to love each other and honor each other. The Bible says husbands love your wife as you love yourself, just as Christ loves you (Eph. 5:25). You must cherish her, love her, and help her reach the potential that Jesus Christ has for her (Eph. 5:29). The Bible says to the wives; submit yourself to your husband (Eph.5:31), you must respect your husband. Titus 2:4-says love your husbands. You must care for them, love them, and also encourage them and be faithful to them (Peter 3:1-2).
The couple is married in the eyes of God when the couple is legally married; there is no other kind of marriage according to God. Malachi 2:14 calls marriage a covenant before God. 1 Corinthians 7:2 talks about sex before marriage being immorality. This differs drastically from today’s standard suggesting there are common law couples. Nowhere in scripture does it talk about common law marriages, which are people that have lived together for so many years that the states look at them as being married, of course, this is just one example of the many immoral decisions that couples make today.
Now I must talk to you about the biblical teachings of divorce Tom and Jane. You must make sure you understand the consequences of this action if you proceed. The Bible clearly talks about divorce and the consequences of that action. Here’s what Mark 10:11-12 says about divorce:
11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”
Mark 10:9 says: “Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
The Bible however will allow divorce if there is adultery involved and only then is it biblically ok to do so. Matthew 19:9- I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”
My view on divorce, as a believer is that it’s wrong, because as I stated in the scriptures above, unless it has to do with adultery one must do what they can to save their marriage and biblically salvage everything that they can since in the eyes of God marriage is a covenant. I believe it is never acceptable for a Christian to divorce. The secular world believes it’s ok to divorce if you’re unhappy, or miserable, there’s no reason to work anything out. They say let’s just get divorce, or they even go as far as getting the marriage annulled, in other words it never happened. The bible says that husbands are to love their wives as Christ loves the Church, and wives are to love and respect their husbands as the head of the household. I just don’t believe that as a Christian if one gets a divorce that they should remarry unless of course it is for an immorality issue. I have known Christians that have gotten remarried, and the spouse that they left did fall away from the Lord. Whether or not they chose not to follow God because of the divorce, I do not know. It’s obvious that there is a spiritual problem going on for you to be considering divorce. Tom and Jane if you’re looking at this biblically, then you must know that you have to obey God, and you need to work this out not only for yourselves, but for your spiritual welfare as well. You need to pray about these things, talk to each other. Get in the word and look to see what God has to say about all of this. Most people that get divorced have stopped talking altogether, thus the reason for their unhappiness.
“The spiritual and social impact of divorce in our society and the Church today is staggering. In 1970 there were 4.3 million divorced people in the US. By 1996 there were 17.4 millions. The US now leads the world in marriage break-ups” This is astounding to me and the rate of divorce keeps going up every year.
